From the season finale of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon to an SNL election special, we round up our top 10 shows to watch this week
1. Invincible Fight Girl – Saturday, November 2, Adult Swim | Series Premiere
A quirky cartoon about chasing your dreams and finding a family in the least likely of places follows Andy (voiced by Sydney Mikayla), a young wrestling lover who sets out to defy the odds and become the greatest pile-driver the sport has ever seen!
2. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – Sunday, November 3, AMC | Season Finale
The long-awaited reunion between Daryl and Carol is already at an end. Not to worry, though; this spinoff has been confirmed for season three. But first, tonight, our dynamic duo must soldier up — under siege from enemies both living and undead. Also see our previous story here.
3. The 2024 SNL Election Special – Monday, November 4, NBC
From Tina Fey as Sarah Palin to Alec Baldwin’s notorious Donald Trump, presidential elections never fail to provide ample fodder for the writers at Saturday Night Live — while attracting big-name stars to drop by and give their take on the buzzy political figures of the day for a sketch or two.
The run-up to election night 2024 has been no different, with Dana Carvey guesting as Joe Biden, Jim Gaffigan playing Democratic VP nominee Tim Walz, Andy Samberg as Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Maya Rudolph as Vice President Kamala Harris. Then, of course, there are the regular cast member impressionists: Bowen Yang as J.D. Vance, Mikey Day as Donald Trump, Jr. and James Austin Johnson’s inspired spin on the elder Donald. Look for all of those faces (and maybe a few unfamiliar ones) to show up in this special airing on the eve of the election, as the political satire goes from simmer to boil.
The cast will, no doubt, be hard-pressed to match the utter lunacy of what we’ve all been watching on the news of late. As NPR summed up in a piece published just ahead of this milestone 50th season: “SNL faces an ongoing challenge: to make America laugh — and think differently — about a political world which has gotten stranger than anyone could have predicted when the show debuted back in 1975.”
4. Destinations of the Damned with Zak Bagas – Monday, November 4, Discovery | Series Premiere
You’ve watched him brazenly explore haunted houses across 26 seasons of Ghost Adventures. Now, Zak Bagans offers up another foray into the macabre designed to both pound your pulse and provoke your thoughts.
Destinations of the Damned finds the D.C. native sending documentarians to traverse some of the world’s most infamously spooky locales. As a press release teases: “Connecting with resident eyewitnesses and paranormal practitioners, the crew navigates local legends, historic mysteries, diverse cultural beliefs and real-life horrors to document claims of hauntings, possessions and curses. What terror inhabits these sites, and condemns the communities that live within them? Bagans narrates as cameras cross into the forbidden and foreboding zones of each deeply troubled location.”
Tonight’s premiere plunges us into the jungles of Armero, Colombia, where in 1985 thousands of poor souls died amidst a volcanic eruption. But was this just another natural disaster, or the result of a murdered priest’s dying curse? Future episodes will tackle “a sinister Malaysian mansion with dangerous otherworldly portals, a mystical island in Singapore where sinister forces drive off the population” and more.
5. Meet Me Next Christmas – Wednesday, November 6, Netflix
Pop star turned actress Christina Milian headlines another holiday rom-com, this one about a gal who looks to score a ticket to a capella sensation Pentatonix’s Christmas Eve concert so she can connect with a dashing suitor (Kofi Siriboe).
6. Nature – Wednesday, November 6, WTVS & KCTS
When discussing cities that are teeming with wildlife, the Southern California enclave of San Diego may not be the first to necessarily come to mind. Yet this week’s Nature documentary, San Diego: America’s Wildest City, reveals that it’s actually the most biologically diverse city in America, where a human population of 3.3 million coexists with a dazzling array of animals, ranging from roadrunners to hummingbirds, orcas to dolphins, and so much more. According to the film’s director, Nate Dappen, San Diego is home to some unique factors that have contributed to this biodiversity, allowing nature to demonstrate its powerful resilience in the face of urban sprawl. “It’s got the Humboldt Current in the Pacific,” he explained. “It makes the ocean extremely abundant. It brings cool, moist air to the desert, so it brings some moisture to a place that’s normally dry . . . It’s got the mountains. It’s got the desert in Baja. It’s got chaparral. It’s got canyons. So it’s got a ton of different kinds of habitats . . . So it really has a lot, and that creates this sort of Goldilocks effect where there’s just a ton of species there. ”Another key factor that Dappen points to is the city’s geographical location, right in the midst of the migration routes used by birds. As a result, he added, “San Diego has more birds than any other place in the country.
7. Countdown: Paul vs. Tyson – Thursday, November 7, Netflix | Series Premiere
Originally set for the summer but delayed until November 15, Netflix is expecting huge viewership for its live coverage of former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson, 58, stepping into the ring with 27-year-old YouTuber Jake Paul. Ahead of the fight, Netflix serves up this three-part documentary series, with the first two parts debuting this week, followed by the third on November 12. “The series will provide viewers with intimate access to the training camps of both fighters, showcasing the grit, determination, and physical challenges they faced along the way,” notes the streamer’s synopsis.
8. Citadel: Honey Bunny – Thursday, November 7, Prime Video | Series Premiere
Avengers and Captain America directors Joe and Anthony Russo expand their small-screen secret agent universe with a second spinoff. Less than a month after Italian thriller Citadel: Diana hit Prime Video, Citadel: Honey Bunny takes us to India in the go-go ’90s, where a stuntman named Bunny (Varun Dhawan) hires a down-on-her-luck actress named Honey (Samantha Ruth Prabhu) for a side job that unexpectedly plunges them both into “a high-stakes world of action, espionage and betrayal.” Plus, of course, a little bit of romance.
Flash forward a few years, and Honey and Bunny are now deeply estranged — but must put aside their differences to rescue their daughter.
“Bunny is unlike any role I’ve played before,” said Dhawan in a press release. “As a spy, he not only leads a double life, but every aspect of his personality has two distinct sides, which was very exciting for me as an actor.”
Meanwhile, Prabhu savoured “the opportunity to be part of an action-packed entertainer with a gripping storyline, rich character depth and intense hand-to-hand combat.”
9. Investigation Alien – Friday, November 8, Netflix | Series Premiere
This new docuseries focuses on veteran investigative journalist George Knapp as he reveals the findings of his 30-year quest investigating UFOs. Presenting never-before-seen evidence, Knapp makes his case that a non-human intelligence has been interacting with humanity on this planet.
10. Joan – Friday, November 8, KTLA | Season Finale
Over the course of five taut, stylish episodes thus far, Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner has deftly brought to life the true story of Joan Hannington — a hard-luck single mother in 1980s London who managed to reinvent herself as one of the city’s most successful jewel thieves and a bona-fide underworld shot-caller.
Amidst pulse-pounding robberies, outlaw romance and a heartbreaking struggle to reclaim her young daughter from social services, Joan has proven to be an engrossing character study — as well as a grand showcase for Turner’s range and charisma.
The sixth and final episode debuts tonight, with a reckoning on the horizon. Tensions run high as the day of the big heist approaches, and when a twist of fate leads to utter disaster, Joan’s criminal exploits threaten to dash her dreams of a happy family life.
