Donald Glover and Maya Erskine star as two spies tasked with impersonating a married couple in Mr. & Mrs. Smith

There’s no need to relive the same old entertainment this Groundhog Day, because Prime Video has a brand-new offering (without any time loops involved). Debuting on Friday, February 2, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is an eight-episode action-comedy series.

While the titular, married Smiths are likely to conjure the image of real-life ex-spouses Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie — who played the titular couple in the 2005 version — the Mr. & Mrs. Smith concept is, in fact, a much older production, one directed by famed filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock back in 1941.

Following Hitchcock’s now-classic tale, several other takes on the cat-and-mouse spy game followed, including a 1941 radio drama (with Carole Lombard reprising her role from Hitchcock’s film, with comedy legend Bob Hope as her husband), a few theatrical versions and the aforementioned 2005 version. There was also a 2007 attempt at a TV series, starring Jordana Brewster and Martin Henderson, that never got past the pilot phase.

This latest iteration stars the multi-talented rapper, writer, actor and producer Donald Glover (Atlanta) as a suave new spy who must assume the identity of “John Smith,” a standard, milquetoast, run-of-the-mill husband to his wife, “Jane,” also a new hire by the same spy agency, played by three-time Emmy-nominee Maya Erskine (PEN15).

“Two lonely strangers land a job working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels and a dream brownstone in Manhattan,” the Prime Video synopsis reads. “The catch: new identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier, espionage or marriage?”

First announced in February 2021, the eight-episode series was originally intended to star Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the titular missus; due to conflicts on the creative side, however, Waller-Bridge stepped away from the series, with Erskine cast instead.

Glover, who signed an exclusive deal with Amazon in 2021, takes his usual stance with respect to the series and has become involved both on-camera and behind it. In addition to starring as the mysterious John Smith, Glover also co-created the series with his old Atlanta writer Francesca Sloane.

Alongside Glover and Erskine, the cast also includes Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood), John Turturro (Barton Fink) and Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You), with a roster of guest stars including
Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy), Alexander Skarsgård (Succession), Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters), Úrsula Corber— (Money Heist), Eiza González (Baby Driver) and American Horror Story alum Sarah Paulson.
