Small Screen’s Big Night

Anthony Anderson makes his hosting debut as the long-awaited 75th annual Emmy Awards finally arrive

Roll out the red carpet, because it is finally time to honour the year’s best television when the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards air live coast-to-coast. Broadcast from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, this year’s long-awaited ceremony welcomes TV’s on-screen and behind-the-scenes stars to recognize the achievements of nominees and winners alike.

Originally set to take place in September 2023, the gala was postponed due to both writers’ and actors’ guild strikes last year. With the new submission guidelines in place for Emmy eligibility, all nominated work had to have aired in its entirety by May 31, meaning that, at the very least, it has been over seven months since these stellar TV shows, specials and movies have graced our screens.

It comes as no surprise that the most-nominated series at this year’s Emmy Awards is HBO’s Succession, with a staggering 27 nominations for its final season. One of the most critically lauded shows in recent memory, Succession started strong in 2018 and only gained momentum over its four-season run. The final season of Succession was appointment television with its incredible writing, directing and performances recognized with nominations this year.

In addition to Succession, the other most-nominated shows were The Last of Us, The White Lotus and Ted Lasso, all of which promise to make a strong showing.

Anthony Anderson makes his hosting debut, but the black-ish star is hardly a novice when it comes to award shows, given that he’s hosted the NAACP Image Awards eight times.

“With our industry’s recent challenges behind us, we can get back to what we love — dressing up and honouring ourselves,” joked Anderson in a statement. “And there’s no better celebratory moment to bring the creative community together than the milestone 75th Emmy Awards. When Fox asked me to host this historic telecast, I was over the moon that Taylor Swift was unavailable, and now I can’t wait to be part of the biggest night in television.”

According to Allison Wallach, Fox’s president of unscripted programming, choosing Anderson to host was a no-brainer. “After Anthony hosted our upcoming show, We Are Family, we knew he’d be a natural fit for a star-studded, anticipatory night like the Emmys,” she said. “Anthony’s known for his humour, heart and spontaneity, so he’s sure to give audiences in the theatre and at home a night they’ll never forget.”

The 75th Emmy Awards air Monday, January 15, on CTV2 & Fox
