2. Mountainhead – Saturday, May 31, HBO Canada

Emmy-winning Succession creator Jesse Armstrong continues skewering the ultra-rich in this HBO original flick, which also marks his directorial debut.

Here, the British scribe invites viewers along on a luxurious mountain getaway with four of the world’s wealthiest, most influential men. Steve Carell plays the elder statesman of the group, venture capitalist Randall; Ramy Youssef and Cory Michael Smith are feuding young tech magnates Jeff and Venis; and Jason Schwartzman is Hugo, the only non-billionaire of the bunch, derisively nicknamed “Soup Kitchen” by the others. Stuck in tight quarters at a Utah ski lodge, egos and agendas inevitably collide — meanwhile, back in the “real world,” a massive financial crisis unravels.

Talking with Esquire about what drew him to pen this particular story of power and depravity, Armstrong explained that, as he was doing research on tech moguls, he continually came across “a straight-up arrogance, which is both scary and comic. You know, being unaware is a key reason why people are funny . . . and arrogance is a good way of being unaware.”

Meanwhile, co-star Youssef mused: “I think these [characters] viewed themselves as nerdy underdogs. That view, which made them so successful coming up, has not been adjusted for the reality of what power they wield.” Click here to watch trailer.

3. MobLand – Sunday, June 1, Paramount+| Season finale

Underworld fixer Harry Da Souza (Tom Hardy) has called in favours, cracked skulls and put his own family in the crosshairs to protect his bosses, the Harrigans, from a mob war. Alas, his efforts have been scuttled at every step not just by the enemy, but by the Harrigans themselves, whose unchecked greed and pride may just be their undoing.

The first season wraps up tonight. While a second has yet to be announced, Hardy did tell The Hollywood Reporter: “The plan is definitely to see more seasons. The question is: Does it become international? There are international elements to organized crime, which are touched on in season one — the control of drugs and ammunition and weapons and people, and all kinds of things that go through Europe and from Africa through to South America, Pakistan and the variable commodities that move around Europe.” Click here to read our feature from our May 3 issue.

4. The 2025 Canadian Screen Awards – Sunday, June 1, CBC & CBC Gem

It may not be the most prestigious or star-studded of the entertainment galas, but in these times of trade wars and threats on our sovereignty, a ceremony that honours the finest films and TV series our home and native land has to offer feels more essential than ever.

With that in mind, the Canadian Screen Awards return for their 13th annual gala this weekend.

Leading all nominees on the TV end is Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent, which is up for 20 trophies (including Best Drama Series and Best Lead Performer for star Kathleen Munroe), while director Matthew Rankin’s acclaimed, Oscar-shortlisted drama Universal Language leads the big-screen categories with 13 nods.

Other contenders include such small-screen fare as Sight Unseen, Children Ruin Everything, Late Bloomer and Bones of Crows, as well as indie flicks like Deaner ’89, Seeds and Darkest Miriam. Meanwhile, high-profile contenders with a little bit of Hollywood star power include the Cate Blanchett-led satire Rumours, Toronto auteur Atom Egoyan’s Seven Veils starring Amanda Seyfried, bittersweet sci-fi drama Can I Get a Witness? with Sandra Oh, and controversial Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice starring Sebastian Stan and Succession alum Jeremy Strong.

Keeping the pageantry humming along with a twinkle in her eye and a quip on her lips is Edmonton-born actress Lisa Gilroy (Interior Chinatown), who says: “I’m over the moon to be hosting such an iconic Canadian event — I feel so lucky. Canada is home to some of the most talented people in the world and I can’t wait to celebrate them!”

5. Duck Dynasty: The Revival – Saturday, June 1, A&E | Series Premiere

A&E

Debuting on A&E in 2012, Duck Dynasty proved to be a surprise hit. Viewers fell in love with bushy-bearded Phil Robertson and his family, down-home tycoons thanks to the business empire built atop the Duck Commander, a duck caller he invented for hunters.

Following an 11-season run over the course of five years, Duck Dynasty said goodbye in 2017. That, however, was not the end; eight years after its cancellation, the Robertsons are back with a new iteration, Duck Dynasty: The Revival

Sadly, health issues will keep the Robertson family patriarch from being part of this new series (after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s he died days before the new series’ premiere). Instead, the focus falls on Phil’s eldest son Willie and wife Korie, along with their grown children and young grandchildren, following the clan’s ongoing exploits as they all reside together in the family’s sprawling compound in rural Louisiana.

Also returning will be Phil’s wife, Miss Kay, and fan favourite Uncle Si, who will no doubt be doling out his unique brand of folksy wisdom and life lessons.

“With their dynasty expanding into more than just ducks, Willie and Korie will bring their signature humour and family fun as they grapple with mapping out the future of Duck Commander, watching the kids navigate marriage, children and businesses of their own, and passing down the family legacy,” notes the A&E synopsis.

“Going back on A&E feels a little like going back home,” Willie and Korie said in a joint statement. “We’re thankful for all who have followed along as our family has grown and expanded and can’t wait to get cameras rolling again on all our new adventures, or perhaps misadventures.” Click here to watch trailer.

6. Next Gen NYC – Tuesday, June 3, Bravo| Series Premiere

Bravo

With the Real Housewives becoming long in the tooth and the Vanderpump Rules gang staring down middle age, where will the next generation of Bravo’s reality TV stars come from? That question is at the heart of this new reality series focusing on a group of young people (including the offspring of various Bravo stars) to provide an “inside peek at the lives of a group trying to navigate the ups and downs of being young adults in New York City.” That group includes Ariana Biermann (daughter of RHOA’s Kim Zolciak-Biermann), Riley Burruss (daughter of RHOA alum Kandi Burruss), Gia Giudice (daughter of RHONJ’s Teresa Giudice) and Brooks Marks (son of RHOSLC’s Meredith Marks). Rounding out the cast are aspiring model Ava Dash (daughter of music mogul Damon Dash and fashion icon Rachel Roy), Paper magazine beauty director Emira D’Spain, creative strategist Georgia McCann, investor Hudson McLeroy, crypto trader Charlie Zakkour and the group’s plucky underdog, Shai Fruchter. 7. Stick – Wednesday, June 3, Apple TV+ | Series Premiere

As the world eagerly awaits the return of Ted Lasso in 2026, streamer Apple TV+ looks to channel that same feel-good spirit with another sports comedy about a scruffy underdog.

In this 10-episode series, Owen Wilson plays Pryce “Stick” Cahill — a golfer whose promising PGA Tour career imploded after a personal tragedy and a (very public) on-course meltdown that has lived on in infamy. These days, when he’s not working as the pro at a low-rent golf course, “Stick” uses his particular set of skills and his wily, affable charms to hustle unsuspecting marks out of quick cash via golf-related wagers — with a little help from his curmudgeonly former caddy, Mitts (Marc Maron).

But life takes a turn once Stick walks by the driving range and lays eyes on Santi Wheeler (Pete Dager), a diamond-in-the-rough prodigy with all the talent in the world. Alas, not unlike Stick, the boy has a lot of work to do on the mental side of the game. But our hero manages to convince Santi and his protective mother Elena (A Man Called Otto’s Mariana Treviño) to take him on as a coach and hit the road in Mitts’ RV on a quest to qualify for the big leagues — and possibly a second shot at greatness for them both.

As creator Jason Keller told Esquire: “My hope for this show is that people relate to the characters in a very real way and they see this found family struggling to get along in a way that they can relate to. It’s pretty cynical out there. There’s certainly a lot of cynical TV — and the news is rough, no matter what side of the news cycle you’re on. My hope is that this is a place where people can connect to characters and feel something, but ultimately feel good about what they’ve watched.”

Also, be sure to look out for a guest turn from Justified alum Timothy Olyphant as a sleazy former rival of Stick’s who played a key part in driving his career out of bounds.

8. Power Moves with Shaquille O’Neal – Wednesday, June 4, Netflix | Series Premiere

This six-part docuseries follows former NBA great Shaquille O’Neal as he takes the reins as president of Reebok Basketball, returning to the brand that gave him his first shot. Teaming up with vice president Allen Iverson, Shaq is on a mission to revive the iconic brand and lead a bold comeback from the sneaker manufacturer’s Boston headquarters. “Power Moves isn’t just about sneakers or titles. It’s about showing the work behind building something meaningful,” O’Neal said in a statement. “This series shows the strategy, setbacks and wins of what it really takes to lead a brand you love. Reebok gave me my start, and now I get to help write its next chapter.” Click here to watch trailer.

9. Barons – Thursday, June 5, Super Channel Fuse | Series Premiere

In this eight-episode Aussie drama, 1970s surf counterculture and commerce collide as a group of best friends, inspired by the ocean, create what will become iconic rival surf brands. Little do they know that their success will eventually tear them, and their entire world, to pieces.

10. Predator: Killer of Killers – Friday, June 6, Disney+

Back in 1987, audiences were introduced to a dreadlocked extraterrestrial murder machine who came from the stars to hunt the most dangerous game of all: man — more specifically, Arnold Schwarzenegger and a team of beefcake commandos stranded in the jungles of Central America.

Though initially panned by critics, Predator would go down as one of the finest action pics ever made. Naturally, it spawned an array of sequels (alas, sans Arnie) that never quite matched the creative heights achieved by the original. But in 2022, the franchise enjoyed a renaissance, with Hulu/Disney+ original film Prey going back to basics, dropping the Predator in the 18th century to battle a young Comanche warrior (Amber Midthunder). Now, director Dan Trachtenberg returns to that fruitful conceptual territory with an animated flick that weaves together three tales from throughout history, as the alien menace tests its mettle against a Viking raider, a samurai in feudal Japan and a Second World War pilot.

It serves as a prelude to the next live-action sequel, Predator: Badlands, which hits theatres in November. Click here to watch trailer.
