What to Watch This Week: February 22 to 28

From a new daytime soap Beyond the Gates to a Kate Hudson basketball comedy, we round up our top 10 shows to watch this week

1. The 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards – Sunday, February 23, Netflix

For the second consecutive year, Netflix is livestreaming the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the only Hollywood award show that exclusively honours actors. Hosted by Kristen Bell (Nobody Wants This), the 2025 edition of the SAG Awards will pay tribute to Jane Fonda, recipient of this year’s Life Achievement Award. Given that 2024 was a banner year for women in film, expect a tight race in the Female Actor in a Leading Role category among nominees Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Mikey Madison (Anora) and Demi Moore (The Substance).

2. 1923 – Sunday, February 23, Paramount+ | Season Premiere

In what’s becoming a trend for creator Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone-iverse, this prequel returns after a lengthy, two-year hiatus. This particular delay is made all the more maddening given that season one ended just when the real action was about to kick off. With Jacob and Cara Dutton (Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren) circling the wagons as their Montana ranch comes under attack from greedy, vengeful enemies, prodigal nephew Spencer (It Ends With UsBrandon Sklenar) slowly makes his way home from soul-searching abroad to join the fight. Alas, the fight he faces in transit will be just as perilous. Joining the cast this season are Dexter alum Jennifer Carpenter as Mamie Fossett, an ahead-of-her-time U.S. marshal, along with New Amsterdam’s Janet Montgomery as Hillary — described by Deadline as “a thoughtful woman who does not want to see injustice go unpunished.”

Sadly, this second chapter will also be the last for 1923. The show, like predecessor 1883, was always conceived as a limited-run affair. In fact, it was going to end after season one before Sheridan decided he needed more time to properly send the Duttons off into the sunset. Click here to watch trailer.

3. Grosse Pointe Garden Society – Sunday, February 23, NBC | Series Premiere

Good Girls creator Jenna Bans is back on NBC with another offbeat, heartfelt crime saga. This one takes place in Georgia, where members of a neighbourhood garden club share more than just a green thumb. Indeed, beneath that white-picket veneer, four citizens of Grosse Pointe are bound together by scandal, secrets and a fateful murder . . . none of which will stay buried for long.

The ensemble includes Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Melissa Fumero as an author with impeccable taste and a self-destructive streak; AnnaSophia Robb (Dr. Death) as a hopelessly romantic teacher who’s fallen on hard times; Aja Naomi King (Lessons in Chemistry) as an unhappily married mom hiding the town’s juiciest secret; and Mr. Robot’s Ben Rappaport as a car restorer who put his dreams on hold to support the career of his now-ex wife. Soap opera aficionados are invited to discover a whole new obsession in this daytime drama from soap veteran Michele Val Jean, whose myriad credits include The Bold and the Beautiful, General Hospital and Santa Barbara. According to the official CBS logline, Beyond the Gates takes place “in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington, D.C., in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States. Here you’ll find a posh gated community with winding, tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions to call home. At the centre of this community are the Duprees, a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty. But behind these pristine walls and lush, manicured gardens are juicy secrets and scandals waiting to be uncovered. And those that live outside these gates are watching closely.” Clifton Davis portrays patriarch Vernon Dupree, a former U.S. senator, while Tamara Tunie plays his wife, Anita, a once-famous singer.

5. Small Achievable Goals – Monday, February 24, CBC | Series Premiere

Two co-creators and co-stars of CBC hit Baroness von Sketch Show return to the network for another quirky exploration of the female experience.

Jennifer Whalen and Meredith MacNeill play Julie and Kris — a pair of women with nothing in common other than consistently being overlooked, and the fact that they’re currently going through the “hormonal adventure” of menopause.

Julie is the long-suffering producer at a Toronto media company, who has been quietly making the trains run on-time for years and is now up for a promotion — only to have the rug pulled out from under her at a staff meeting when a younger, hipper co-worker is anointed as her new boss by the company’s aloof CEO.

Kris, meanwhile, is a gregarious single mother whose charisma has been wasted as she toiled away in low-paying retail gigs . . . until her social media channel suddenly blows up and she lands a job at Julie’s company, hosting her own beauty and lifestyle podcast.

After Julie’s failure to land the aforementioned promotion, she’s slapped with the less-than-prestigious task of being Kris’ producer. And yet, this unlikely duo find common ground in their indignity, and look to improve their lives one day at a time by setting . . . well, see title. Click here to watch trailer.

6. Pamela’s Cooking with Love – Tuesday, February 25, Flavour Network | Series Premiere

The Pamelanaissance continues! Following a 2022 Broadway run with stage musical Chicago, Ladysmith-born Baywatch icon Pamela Anderson continued pushing her artistic boundaries in 2024 via a bravura turn in filmmaker Gia Coppola’s bittersweet indie flick The Last Showgirl

Amidst all that dramatic success, Pam has also forged into the reality space — first with home-reno series Pamela’s Garden of Eden and now via Pamela’s Cooking With Love. Here, the actress and PETA activist invites celeb chefs to her rustic home on Vancouver Island to prep delectable plant-based meals, which are then savoured by loved ones in a dinner party at the end of each episode. In the process, she looks to learn absolutely everything she can about food. Across eight episodes, season one’s guest-chefs include: Andy Baraghani, Gregory Gourdet, Gabe Kennedy, Melissa King, Nancy Silverton, Michael Solomonov, Claudette Zepeda and David Zilber.

In an interview with Flavour Network, Anderson teased that viewers can expect a feast for all of their senses: “I love setting the table. It’s just as important as the food. We eat with our eyes as well as our stomachs. I feel like it was really nice to be able to share that on a stage like a TV show that I can share with so many people instead of just my kids, my kids’ friends and their girlfriends.”

“It’s a very sensual, compassionate way of entertaining,” she continued. “This is just a celebration of the way I love to cook. I’m a very outdoorsy person, I love to eat outdoors and create beautiful dinner parties for family and friends. And so it’s all these entertaining little tips. It’s also a lot of crafty things because I’m actually a very crafty person. I love to make candles and flower arrangements, and I was just in heaven.”

7. Big Family, Big City – Tuesday, February 25, TLC

TLC

TLC trains its cameras on yet another unruly clan. This time, it’s the de la Mottes — whose ranks include mom Amber, dad Mark and 11 kids. (What’s more, as she says in the trailer, Amber would “love to have one more!”)

The hook for this particular docu-romp (which is a one-hour special, not a full series) is that the de la Mottes recently pulled up stakes and moved from their quiet suburb in San Diego to the metropolitan chaos of Harlem, New York. United by a family tradition of music, the de la Mottes add to the beautiful cacophony of the street by busking together — even as their conservative values clash with life in NYC. As TLC’s press release teases: “With worldly influences at every corner and mounting pressure to make it in the city that never sleeps, they’ll have to adapt fast — or risk losing the closeness they’ve worked so hard to build.”

8. Running Point – Thursday, February 27, Netflix | Series Premiere

The world of professional sports has been explored in various TV series, and that’s the case with a new Netflix comedy from exec producers Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen.

In Running Point, Kate Hudson stars as Isla Gordon, a reformed party girl who works in a low-level job for the Los Angeles Waves, the legendary professional basketball team owned by her wealthy family.

The team is run by her oldest brother, Cam (Justin Theroux), while brothers Sandy (Drew Tarver) and Ness (Scott MacArthur) are also executives with the team. When Cam’s public flameout sends him to court-ordered rehab, he appoints Isla as the team’s new president — a decision that surprises everyone, including Isla.

Ambitious yet overlooked, Isla faces an uphill battle to prove that Cam made the right choice, not just to her skeptical brothers, but also to the members of the Waves board and the team’s millions of fans.

“I’ve been eager to dive into something comedic with a team I admire, and this role offered a fresh challenge and was hilarious and engaging right from the start. The chance to work with people I respect and to bring a unique female perspective to a male-driven world was incredibly appealing,” Hudson shared in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum

“I really love writing shows about ambitious women, whether they’re a 15-year-old girl in the Valley or the president of a basketball team. We wanted to ensure that audiences could see themselves in the characters’ struggles and triumphs,” said Kaling.

“The humour and heart of the show make it accessible to both sports fans and those new to basketball,” noted Barinholtz, while Hudson added, “It’s designed to be inclusive and offer something for everyone without alienating folks. It’s a big, warm embrace, which is true to Mindy’s vision.” Click here to watch trailer.

9. House of David – Thursday, February 27, Prime Video | Series Premiere

A new biblical epic reflects on David — unlikely king of Israel. When King Saul (Jack Ryan’s Ali Suliman) is corrupted by pride, the prophet Samuel (Avatar’s Stephen Lang) decrees that God has chosen an outcast teen (Michael Iskander) as his successor, leading to a saga of “love, loss and violence” for young David. 10. Aitana: Metamorphosis – Friday, February 28, Netflix | Series Premiere

Netflix

Directed by Chloé Wallace (A Perfect Story), this six-episode docuseries takes viewers deep inside the life of 23-year-old Spanish pop star Aitana, who came to fame via a TV singing competition and has gone on to become an international music sensation. According to Netflix, Wallace was granted “exclusive and unprecedented access” to her day-to-day life. Aitana: Metamorphosis “will invite Aitana’s fans to get to know her as they have never seen her before, enjoying her greatest hits and navigating complicated bumps in a process of personal and professional growth and maturity as she continues to establish herself as one of the biggest stars of Spanish music.” Click here to watch trailer.
